Dainik india news,New Delhi, 24 September 2024: The 10th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Conference concluded today at the Parliament premises in New Delhi. Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla, Chairperson of the CPA India Region, addressed the closing session and highlighted concerns about the increasing commotion and acrimony in legislative bodies.

Shri Birla stated that this issue has been regularly discussed with Presiding Officers, urging them to maintain dignity and decorum in the proceedings, rooted in Indian values. He emphasized that legislative traditions should reflect the essence of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,” ensuring that discussions on government policies are dignified and inclusive, with participation from all members.

Highlighting the importance of legislatures in shaping the country’s development, Shri Birla called for democratic institutions to be transparent, accountable, and actively engaged with the public to meet their needs and aspirations. He also recommended providing comprehensive training to new Members of Parliament on the functioning, decorum, and legislative tools available to them.

Shri Birla urged Presiding Officers to maintain consistent dialogue across party lines, encouraging collaborative politics to set new standards. He expressed satisfaction with the ongoing digitization of legislative processes, noting that state legislatures lagging in this aspect should accelerate their efforts to achieve the vision of ‘One Nation, One Digital Platform.’

Addressing issues raised during the conference, such as financial autonomy and the reduced number of sitting days in legislative sessions, Shri Birla assured that these matters would be further discussed to find appropriate and acceptable solutions.

Shri Birla emphasized the importance of sustainable and inclusive development, stressing that its benefits should reach every section of society, especially the most marginalized. He also expressed optimism that the conference would lead to tangible improvements in the functioning of legislative bodies, with Presiding Officers encouraged to adopt new policies and frameworks for the future.

The conference was attended by 42 Presiding Officers, including four Chairpersons, 25 Speakers, and their Principal Secretaries or Secretaries. The theme of the conference was “The Role of Legislative Bodies in the Attainment of Sustainable and Inclusive Development.”

The event was preceded by the Executive Committee meeting of the CPA India Region on 23 September 2024. On the second day of the conference, Shri Om Birla, along with other Presiding Officers of state legislative bodies, paid tribute to eminent personalities at Prerna Sthal within Parliament premises.
