SanskritBharati Eastern Region Contact Head urges Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit to consider Sanskrit dhyeya-vakyas on combat aircraft, military establishments and training infrastructure

A distinctive proposal to bring Sanskrit into the visual and motivational ethos of the Indian Air Force has been placed before Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, the designated Chief of the Air Staff, with SanskritBharati Eastern Region Contact Head Jitendra Pratap Singh urging consideration of Sanskrit dhyeya-vakyas, inspirational maxims and nationally resonant inscriptions on fighter aircraft, military establishments, offices, training institutions and workshops.
Singh made the appeal during a courtesy meeting with Air Marshal Dixit in Delhi on Air Force Day. He presented a bouquet and a First Day Cover and conveyed his felicitations ahead of Dixit’s assumption of the IAF’s apex command.
The proposition is far more consequential than the mere inscription of an ancient language on a combat platform. It seeks to explore whether India’s contemporary aerospace prowess can find a symbolic vocabulary in its own civilisational inheritance. The suggested Sanskrit expressions could embody ideals of kartavya (duty), shaurya (valour), tyaga (sacrifice), anushasana (discipline) and rashtra-seva (service to the nation)—values intrinsic to the ethos of a professional fighting force.
Sanskrit occupies an extraordinary place in India’s intellectual history. Its corpus encompasses philosophy, grammar, logic, jurisprudence, medicine, mathematics, literature and diverse systems of knowledge. Its exceptional semantic precision and philosophical profundity make it capable of distilling complex ideas into remarkably succinct formulations. In a military environment, such formulations could potentially serve as compact expressions of resolve, duty and esprit de corps.
The proposal therefore touches upon a larger question of national identity: whether military modernisation and civilisational consciousness can coexist as complementary dimensions of national power. India’s fighter aircraft, advanced avionics, network-centric warfare capabilities and evolving aerospace architecture represent technological sophistication; a carefully chosen Sanskrit maxim, proponents argue, could provide a corresponding expression of the values for which that power is ultimately deployed.
The timing of the proposal is significant. Air Marshal Dixit is set to assume charge as the 29th Chief of the Air Staff on October 31, 2026. Currently serving as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, he has more than 3,500 hours of flying experience and has operated platforms including the Mirage-2000, MiG series, Jaguar, Kiran, Hawk, IL-78 and Tejas. His distinguished career includes association with Operation Safed Sagar and Operation Rakshak, apart from command of the Central Air Command and service as Chief of the Integrated Defence Staff.
The proposal, however, remains precisely that—a proposal for institutional consideration, and not an approved IAF policy, operational directive or service order. Any decision regarding its adoption would rest exclusively with the competent authorities within the established command and administrative framework of the Indian Air Force.
Military mottos and insignia traditionally serve a purpose well beyond ornamentation. They encapsulate institutional memory, professional ethos, martial values and esprit de corps. In that context, a judiciously selected Sanskrit maxim on an Indian combat aircraft could potentially become a powerful visual articulation of national resolve and civilisational continuity.
The underlying idea is unequivocal: India’s military modernity need not be culturally deracinated. A fighter aircraft may embody cutting-edge aerospace engineering and combat capability, while the ethos associated with its service can simultaneously draw upon a civilisational tradition whose intellectual vocabulary has endured for millennia.
Should the competent authorities eventually accord the proposal institutional sanction, a Sanskrit inscription on an IAF combat aircraft would signify considerably more than words painted upon a fuselage. It would represent a striking confluence of aerospace power and civilisational consciousness, technological prowess and national ethos—a contemporary expression of an India that is modern in capability, confident in identity and uncompromising in its commitment to the nation.
