Dainik india news,Lucknow: The 38th Foundation Day celebration of the Radiation Oncology Department at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) was held with great fervor. On this occasion, Prof. M.K. Gupta, Head of the Radiation Oncology Department at AIIMS Rishikesh, delivered the distinguished Prof. G.N. Agarwal Memorial Lecture.
The event was graced by the esteemed presence of KGMU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sonia Nityanand, as the Chief Guest, and the Dean of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow, Prof. Shaleen Kumar, as the Guest of Honour.
In his address, Prof. M.K. Gupta highlighted that India witnesses approximately 1.5 million new cancer cases each year, with a staggering nine lakh fatalities. He attributed this high mortality rate largely to the lack of adequate treatment infrastructure. He remarked, “Patients from regions like Bareilly are compelled to traverse multiple districts to seek treatment in Lucknow, an arduous and time-consuming ordeal.”
Prof. Gupta proposed a solution, emphasizing that the National Medical Commission (NMC) should mandate the establishment of Radiation Oncology Departments in every medical college. Such an initiative would ensure that cancer treatment facilities are accessible in every district across the nation.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sonia Nityanand announced that a Linear Accelerator machine would soon be installed in the Radiation Oncology Department at KGMU. This advancement will significantly alleviate the burden on patients awaiting treatment.
Guest of Honour, Prof. Shaleen Kumar, reminisced about his association with the department and underscored the importance of students imbibing not only advanced education but also a demeanor of compassion and professionalism.
